Yute Employability Workshops Oversubscribed

_DSCN2276 Leading Jamaican charitable organisation, Youth Upliftment Through Employment (YUTE), hosted two workshops for the benefit of more than 100 unemployed young persons residing in communities in South East St. Andrew.

The workshops were held at Christ Church Hall in Vineyard Town on Wednesday, August 24 and at the Swallowfield Community Centre on Thursday, August 25, 2016.

Executive Director of YUTE, Alicia Glasgow Gentles said, “The workshops were geared toward preparing approximately 60 young persons for the world of work and covered topics such as resume writing, dress and deportment, interview skills and communication.”

Mrs. Glasgow Gentles expressed pleasant surprise at the attendance of young persons between the ages of 14 and 29, which exceeded expectations. “It was heartening to have the workshops oversubscribed in both communities, reiterating the strong interest in training of this nature. There is a significant gap for employability training in similar communities, which YUTE is hoping to fill through partnerships.”

The Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) Foundation was one such partner for the South East St. Andrew workshops, she said. The Foundation offered sessions on Financial Literacy, as part of it’s “Be Wise” programme.

Member of Parliament for South East St. Andrew, Julian Robinson expressed his gratitude to YUTE, the JN Foundation and the British High Commission, which sponsored the workshops.

He said, “These workshops are critical to assisting our young people in being better prepared for job opportunities when they arise.”
