Fight For Peace

Fight For Peace was established in Rio de Janeiro in 2000 as a local NGO, working with young people armed and employed by drug trafficking gangs. Today, through the Global Alumni Programme (GAP), a training and capacity building initiative designed to share the FFP methodology with other organisations around the world, FFP has partnered with YUTE to offer the FFP methodology to young people in the Kingston Metropolitan Area.

Youth violence reduction interventions developed at the FFP Academy in Rio, have been shared with YUTE, as well as other NGO’s in Jamaica and adapted for local implementation.

The YUTE/FFP programme was initially piloted with the YUTE Build participants and has recently been offered to all YUTE participants. Through the pilot YUTE/FFP  provided 20 young people in Jamaican communities that are affected by violence, access to FFP’s holistic, ‘5 Pillar’ methodology that combines boxing, education, employability, psycho-social support and youth leadership.

YouthActionNet

THE CHALLENGE

Across Jamaica, young leaders are pioneering innovative solutions to urgent social and environmental challenges; yet they often lack the knowledge, skills, and networks needed to maximize their contributions. These young visionaries represent a powerful force for change if given the opportunity to develop much-needed skills and learn from and collaborate with one another.

THE INITIATIVE

To address these needs, the YUTEActionNet will be established in 2016. The programme is a result of a global partnership between YUTE Limited and the International Youth Foundation (IYF). Implemented by YUTE, the programme identifies and supports young social entrepreneurs, ages 18 to 29, across the country, while strengthening the youth social innovation sector as a whole.

The programme’s goals include:

  • Recognising, promoting, and strengthening youth-led social ventures with proven success at addressing social and/or environmental challenges in Jamaica.
  • Providing young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to carry out their work more effectively.
  • Creating a network of young Jamaican change agents through linking fellows with each other and relevant organizations and experts nationally and internationally.
  • Advocating for the role of youth in promoting social development

Annually, the YUTEActionNet programme will recognize 3 youth-led projects that are positively impacting their communities. Each of the winning projects receives funding to support their work. Fellows also participate in advanced training during a weeklong workshop covering topics such as leadership development, project management, and social marketing.

Membership in a Global Network

YUTEActionNet is a member of the YouthActionNet global network. A signature IYF programme, YouthActionNet pursues a bold mission: to strengthen and expand the impact of youth-led social ventures around the globe. Since 2006, it has created a global network of national/regional youth leadership institutes of which YUTEActionNet will be one. Today, that network spans 19 institutions—from Australia to Spain, Brazil to Nigeria—with the goal of expanding to 24 by the end of 2015.

Young social entrepreneurs selected for the YUTEActionNet programme benefit from being a part of YouthActionNet’s expanding community of change-makers, now numbering more than 1,000. As members of this network, they are able to access myriad continuing education opportunities (e.g., online resources, educational videos, webinars), in addition to networking with their peers worldwide.
