Ministry to develop labour market information app

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) — The Ministry of Labour and Social Security, through its Electronic Labour Exchange (ELE) programme, will be partnering with the New Employment Opportunities (NEO) project to develop a Labour Market Information System (LMIS) mobile application (app) that will make it easier for employers and jobseekers to register their job requirements.

Portfolio Minister, Shahine Robinson, who made the disclosure recently, said the mobile application, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of the next financial year, will improve accessibility to the LMIS.

She hailed Youth Upliftment Through Employment (YUTE), through which the NEO project is being executed, for the partnership.

Meanwhile, the minister is urging members of the business community to take advantage of the inexpensive service provided by the LMIS in order to find qualified and trained workers.

“The LMIS is targeting young people, in particular, for they are a significant part of the job-seeking population, and they constitute an important pool of the skills that are sought after for opportunities locally and abroad. Against this background, I am beseeching qualified jobseekers to register with the LMIS and post their résumés to indicate their availability for suitable job opportunities,” Robinson said.

She expressed thanks to the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for the tremendous support it has given towards the development and maintenance of the LMIS “and for the role it continues to play in assisting us to shape a qualified, responsive and efficient workforce, and, by so doing, improve the lives of many Jamaicans”.

LMIS is a job-matching facility as well as a database of qualitative and quantitative information.

The data are collected from a number of labour market information producers and disseminated via the website in order to improve access.

LMIS services may be accessed at any ministry of labour and social security office islandwide.
